  11 I just bought a new (to me) bicycle, an old-ish Dawes Super Galaxy.  It is in reasonably
  12 good condition, but has two issues that are immediately obvious:

  14 * The frame has a number of scratches, chipped paint, light surface rust and a
  15   small dent on the top tube.
  16 * The bottom bracket has plastic retaining rings.  These have a reputation for
  17   breaking when you attempt to remove them.

  19 It came with front and rear racks, mudguards and mostly Shimano Deore LX components.

  21 There is a list of things to do on this bike sooner or later, each of which will become
  22 the topic of an article.  In descending order of urgency:

  24 1. Remove surface rust, prime, paint and clear coat the chipped areas.
  25 2. Try to remove and replace the bottom bracket, something with metal retaining
  26    rings.
  27 3. Repack the hub bearings.
  28 4. Replace chain and cassette.
  29 5. Clean and repack headset.
  30 6. Replace cables and bar tape.
